Using a wiki in the SMS classroom
What's a wiki?
A very simple explanation is that it is a website that people can go to, edit and add comments.
Most people are familiar with Wikipedia although they may never have added comments to it.
Wikipedia is just a giant wiki. Anyone can go to Wikipedia and edit pages there. It’s very simple.
Why not go to Wikipedia and try it out for fun?

Why use a wiki with your SMS class?
Wikis allow people doing a group project to collaborate more efficiently. It’s popular with a lot of schools and universities to enhance group learning.
It’s a new way of coordinating and swapping information. It’s easier for a group to use than email because all the information is located in one place instead of in dozens of different emails.
Wikis also provide a platform for input from people who are shy about speaking up in class, or from people who prefer to mull things over before commenting.
Using a wiki for a class group project - an example
In the SMS overview presentation, the speaker suggested that you ask students to collect reporting forms and print them out. Then students could compare and comment on them.
Why not use a wiki for this project? It's easy to set up, and there are lots of free wiki software programs out there, or programs that give you generous free trials like thirty days. That's plenty of time to do a wiki project with your class.
We’re using wikispaces.com in this example.
Whichever one you choose, stay clear of any privacy issues. At least the first time you start a wiki, keep it private to your group rather than let the public view it or edit it.
Directions for keeping it private will be included with the software you are using.
Getting started
- Go to wikispaces.com and sign up for a free trial
- Create your project wiki
- Set your administrator and privacy preferences
- Insert your material
- Give the class the website, passwords and whatever other instructions you want to give.
Here’s what it could look like when you get this far.
