Retirement Coaching
Retirement coaching is one of the great emerging services that help people plan for the later phase of life. The boomers and the silent generation (born during or before WWII)can expect to live many years after retiring. We went to school to prepare for our adult years; doesn’t it make sense to go to school again, to educate ourselves for the older years? We all know how to worry about mild hearing loss, memory loss, and the other issues that we think will color our later years. We don’t need to go to Worry School to learn about these things. But we do need to teach ourselves about the positive aspects of later years. A Retirement Coach helps people look at the personal, emotional and other lifestyle issues that make the later years fulfilling and satisfying.
What a Retirement Coach does and doesn’t do
A Retirement Coach works with you, typically over the phone or in a seminar setting. The coach helps you become clear about the values you cherish, the dreams you have, and how they can motivate you to plan the next years of your life. Your inner journey with your coach should help you crystallize the reasons you will want to get out of bed every morning in your mature years. Working with a coach should help you make the transition smoothly. You and your coach will be custom tailoring how you will live your mature years, what you will pursue, and how you will find richness and meaning in your life. Your coach is not usually a Financial Planner, or legal advisor; so don’t expect him or her to take on this role unless trained to do so. Most coaches can help you with making a simple budget, but stay with a Financial Planner for the more technical questions. Your coach is there to help you with the other very important areas of your life that make it successful and rewarding - the emotional, social and intangible factors that make life good or not good.
Specific retirement ideas and retirement planning tips you should expect
Working with your coach, expect to cover the follow areas: How will you find personal satisfaction? How will you contribute to society? Will you work part time, full time, outside the home or at home? How will you stay in touch with a social network if you aren’t working outside the home? What hobbies and interests do you want to stay with, develop or learn?
Choosing a Retirement Coach
This is an emerging career, and there are really no formal professional/academic qualifications needed to set up shop. So ask around, and compare. You can find plenty of information by Googling and comparing the various offers you see on the Internet. Your local community newspaper probably has ads as well. This would make it even easier to talk to local people who have used the coach. You can expect to spend around 25 hours or so with the coach, by phone or in seminars. Make sure you talk to the coach first before signing up. This is a person you will want to be comfortable with because you will be sharing your dreams and hopes for the future. Taking a retirement course, or coaching, is an investment in those dreams and hopes. I hope yours works out just as you want!
