How Steve Herzfeld outsourced his parents to India

We're seeing stories in the papers these days about a new phenomenon in India - retirement homes. This is a change for a culture where traditionally elderly family members lived out their later years at home with the rest of the family.

In a special twist, Steve Herzfeld "outsourced" his parents from Florida to India.

But don't worry, Steve outsourced himself too. (An article by Laurie Goering in the Seattle Times August 3, 2007 tells the fascinating tale.)

Steve went with them. It solved his problem of draining the family resources to care for his elderly and aiing parents.

Every time he looks at the bills less than $2,000 a month for food, rent, utilities, medications, phones and 24-hour staffing Herzfeld is happy that he made this choice.

"It can be done," he said. "This is working."

Now that adds another choice to the options most of us normally think of for housing on retirement.

Smart Cars for Seniors that Drive Themselves?

Will there be smart cars for seniors that drive themselves by the time you are eighty?

Well, maybe the cars won't be quite that smart. But a flurry of articles recently told us about the help they will be able to give senior drivers in driving more safely.

Professor Ryuta Kawashima. the man who helped bring us Nintendo Brain Age Games, is teaming up with Toyota to design smart cars for seniors.

A joint study group is looking at an intelligent system that can sense the driving patterns of drivers and curb any dangerous activity, Kawashima said.

No it's not science fiction, in fact the group is saying that actual production may be as soon as five years from now.

In the meantime, read more about seniors and driving today, and what you can plan to do to increase your changes of driving safely into your second fifty years.
