Nia dance exercise classes are a joy

A few days ago I accidentally found an internet video demo of Nia dance.

It took me somewhere between 5 and 10 seconds to realize that I wanted to do try this exercise in dance form. It seemed to be everything I had been looking for.

Not just the Nia exercise, although I certainly wanted that. Not just the fitness routine, although I certainly wanted that.

More than anything I wanted to be able to dance the way the students in the class were dancing. Right away it reminded me of being young, moving easily, un-self-consciously and joyfully.

After trying to find class that I could fit into my difficult schedule, I decided to get one of their dance instruction videos (actually a DVD) and start out that way.

The moment I turned it on I was able to dance along with the class. No awkward trying to learn set step patterns, then set them to music. No turning one way while the whole class turned the other way.

It was so easy to follow along, and what's more it's absolutely true what Nia says on its website. You just smile while you are dancing. It comes naturally because you are so delighted to be dancing so easily.

Everyone can do this. You can move in whatever range you like, and keep the pace to whatever intensity suits you. The whole idea is to dance to the way your body can move. Over time, range will increase and intensity may increase as well.

But in the meantime, my very strong first impression is that even beginners can get joy out of doing exercise.

Follow my progress in my Dance Diary. I'll be reporting my progress over my first six weeks of Nia exercise classes at home and if I join a group class.
