Nia Dance Diary Day 1

Nia Dance Diary Day 1 and doing Nia exercise at your own pace
Today, January 4, 2009, I danced along for about 40 minutes. I had to break it down into 3 sessions, but that was fine. I just paused the DVD and came back when I was ready. Nia fitness only asks you to do what your body is ready to do.

Nia fitness moves
I was astonished to find that I could dance along without having to practise the steps beforehand.

Yes I was a beginner at the Nia movements. But the difference with Nia exercise was that it didn’t matter that I didn’t know the steps. I knew instantly that I would be able to learn them at my pace. And in the meantime I could just dance along.I was delighted

Nia dance is joyful Smiling as you dance
It’s true what they say in their promotional material. You just smile as you dance. You smile because all of a sudden you are restored to moving to the music. I was also smiling with the delight of feeling that I was truly learning to dance as I learned Nia fitness.

Of course I was doing this in the privacy of my own living room. But I felt strangely certain that even if I was in a class with other Nia dance enthusiasts I would feel the same way. And normally I am pretty self-conscious learning in front of people.

My Nia exercise resolution
I plan to dance 4 to 5 times a week. On the days when I’m not dancing, I’ll be learning the Nia moves. There are 52 moves in all, but like the Nia book says” some aren’t much more complicated than standing up”. But taken in all, they are the core moves that bring you along to Nia fitness. (p.99)

I’ll start by learning two moves on non-dance days. Then as a bonus, I will learn one move more on dance days.

That way I should be able to learn all 52 moves in about 3 to 4 weeks.

Stay tuned for Diary Day 2 to see how I progress.
